What one piece of advice would you like to give to students who are about to graduate?
Students need to align their career choices with their passions and interests. In my experience, pursuing a job solely for financial gain often doesn’t result in a fulfilling career. Instead, finding a role that excites you, allows you to apply your knowledge, and challenges you to grow can ultimately lead to personal satisfaction and financial success.
Have you experienced any unexpected turns? How did your Penn State experience help prepare you?
After graduating from Penn State, I encountered unexpected challenges as I transitioned into the workforce. There was a period when I moved from one job to another, struggling to find roles that truly aligned with my values and the knowledge I had gained during my education. However, my experience at Penn State gave me the confidence to avoid settling for a job solely because it paid the bills. Instead, it motivated me to seek a career path where I could make a meaningful impact, enjoy my work, and continue to grow personally and professionally.
What was the favorite/best class you took at Penn State and why?
The best class I took at Penn State was EM SC 240N: Energy and Sustainability in Contemporary Culture, taught by Dan Kasper. He inspired a deep passion for sustainability in me. The course focused on examining the subject matter through the lens of humanistic values, critically evaluating the science, ideas, and claims presented in media concerning the planet's ability to sustain life. I was fascinated by this approach to energy efficiency. As someone who isn’t very technically inclined, exploring the science of energy efficiency through a humanistic perspective resonated strongly with my nature.
How did Penn State help prepare you for your career so far?
My deepest passion in this career field is to promote energy efficiency principles to individuals with low to moderate incomes (LMI). Penn State and EMS played a pivotal role in shaping me for this work, equipping me with the knowledge and mindset to integrate my passions and values into my career search. This preparation enabled me to find a fulfilling role with a company that not only aligns with my interests but also supports the growth of my expertise and fuels my commitment to making a difference.
What’s your go-to band/song and why?
My favorite band is Bob Marley and the Wailers, and their timeless song "Redemption Song" holds a special place in my heart. This iconic track resonates deeply with me because of its powerful message of hope, inspiration, and love. Through its profound lyrics and soulful melody, the song speaks to themes of freedom, resilience, and the enduring human spirit, reminding us to overcome struggles and embrace positivity. Bob Marley's ability to weave such depth and meaning into his music is truly remarkable. "Redemption Song" is a constant source of motivation and reflection, and I am never tired of hearing its transformative energy.
What’s your favorite weekend activity?
My favorite weekend activity is spending quality time with my wife and daughter, which is incredibly special. After a busy, and sometimes hectic work week, having the chance to unwind and enjoy their company feels like the ultimate recharge for my mind and spirit. Whether it's sharing laughter over a family meal, going for a stroll in the park, or simply relaxing at home together, these moments bring me peace and joy. It's during these precious hours that I am reminded of what truly matters in life, and I find the motivation to continue making a positive impact.
What’s your favorite quote and why?
My favorite quote is "it is what it is," because while it embodies accepting a situation exactly as it stands, it also carries a more profound, motivating message for me. This phrase is not just about acknowledging reality—it's a call to action, a reminder that life moves forward, and so must I. It encourages me to focus on what I can control. This mindset has been a driving force in my life, pushing me to overcome challenges, learn from setbacks, and pursue growth with resilience. It’s a philosophy that reminds me to keep moving forward, no matter the circumstances.
