Qingwang Yuan
Qingwang Yuan is an associate professor and the Quentin E. and Louise L. Wood Faculty Fellow in the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Program in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering at Penn State. He is leading The Hope Group — HydrOgen Production from the Earth's subsurface (HOPE).
Yuan's research lies at the intersection of reservoir engineering, geoscience, geochemistry, reactive transport, and subsurface energy engineering. His primary research program is centered on developing the scientific and engineering foundations for subsurface hydrogen production. In particular, his group investigates three complementary pathways: natural and stimulated geological hydrogen (GeoH₂) production (carbon-free), hydrogen production through coupled rock-water-CO₂ reactions and mineral carbonation (carbon-negative); and in-situ hydrogen production from petroleum reservoirs (carbon-zero). His secondary research program focuses on enhanced geothermal recovery, CO₂ sequestration, and unconventional oil and gas recovery.
Yuan is the co-founder and president of the Association of Geological Hydrogen (AGH), where he works with researchers, industry, national laboratories, students, and other stakeholders to advance GeoH₂ research, education, workforce development, and international collaboration. He also chaired the inaugural Gordon Research Conference—Geologic Hydrogen in 2026.
Before joining Penn State, Yuan was a faculty member in petroleum engineering at Texas Tech University. Earlier, he conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University and at the University of Regina/Saskatchewan Research Council through the Mitacs Elevate Program. He also worked as a reservoir engineer at the CNOOC Research Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary.
