Distinguished Achievement Award in Energy Engineering and Fuel Science
Madhukar (Maud) Rao recently retired after more than 36 years in industrial R&D for major chemical and semiconductor materials companies. He has held senior positions in R&D management at Air Products, Inc., Versum Materials, and EMD Electronics. In his most recent position as Director of Technology Operations for the Semiconductor Materials at EMD Electronics, Maud led the team responsible for integrating the two large R&D organizations of EMD Electronics and Versum Materials. At Versum Materials, Maud served as Global Director of Technology for Advanced Deposition Materials and at Air Products, as the Global Technology Director of Technology for wet-cleaning products where he led large international product-development teams developing specialty thin-film precursors and wafer-cleaning products. Many of the products developed by his teams are currently in use in semiconductor manufacturing.
Prior to taking management roles, his research at Air Products focused on new membrane and adsorbent materials for gas separation, where he was among the first to develop thin, microporous carbon membranes for gas separation. He also developed several novel gas and liquid separation processes.
Maud has 37 U.S. patents on semiconductor materials and gas and liquid separations processes, authored 71 technical publications, and presented his technical work at many international conferences.
He received his Ph.D. and M.S from Penn State in 1985 and 1982, respectively, and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1980. He lives in Carlsbad, CA, with his wife, Linda.
