The SME Eastern Collegiate Mine Rescue Contest will be held on March 30 from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Ag arena at University Park. There will be an estimated 7 teams competing from Penn State, Virginia Tech, WV University, and the University of Kentucky. The Mine Rescue Contest is one where the teams will compete against each other. There are separate rules for coal mining and non-coal mining rescue contests. Mines, as a statutory requirement, have to maintain mine rescue teams and rescue team members are required to participate in frequent contests and trainings. Student teams are not required teams but an important part of leadership training. All members are volunteers and The Mount Nittany Rescue Team is now recognized by UPAC of Penn State.
The purpose of the contest is to prepare students to take the lead in their future employment and familiarize students with statutes in coal mining. This event is free and open to the public. Parking is available at the Ag Area.
