Escape and Survive
This site was conceived and launched in 2008 as a means of providing miners, trainers, responsible persons, safety people, and supervisors easy access to different types of training and education events and materials such as webcasts, videos, training modules, instructor guides, video clips, etc. Currently, all materials have been produced by the Penn State Miner Training Program (MTP) through funding provided by MSHA’s Brookwood-Sago Grants (BSG) and the generous support and assistance of mining companies, miners, independent contractors, and equipment manufacturers. Please read on for more information on current and past projects.
The purpose of this project is to increase the knowledge and skills of underground coal and stone miners in reducing the risks of mine emergencies. Focused instruction (video, virtual reality, instructor-ready) materials will be developed for underground coal miners in the areas of ventilation, rock dusting, explosion/fire prevention, roof/rib control, housekeeping, and machinery maintenance. Instructional materials for underground stone mines will be developed for fire prevention and ground control.
The purpose of this project is to increase the knowledge and skills of supervisors in the area of workplace examinations, and to explore the means to improve miner safety and health through enhancing a culture of prevention.
This project addresses the important topic of refuge alternatives. The project training materials include a webcast (Watch Webcast), technology transfer seminar, video clips and a resource manual.
The second project consists of two training videos and an Instructors’ Guide. This guide includes a video user’s guide, 20 tool-box talks and two emergency scenarios.
The purpose of the first project is to provide a comprehensive, general training program on mine emergency preparedness as provided for by the provisions of the MINER Act of 2006. This project featured the Escape & Survive webcast, six training modules, and several video clips which address important evacuation procedures.
