Biographical Sketch: 

Dr. Chunshan Song is the Director of the EMS Energy Institute, a Distinguished Professor of Fuel Science in the John and Willie Leone Family Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering and a Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical Engineering (courtesy) at The Pennsylvania State University. He also serves as Associate Director of Penn State Institutes of the Energy and Environment. Since 2011, he has been serving as the founding Director at Penn State for the international Penn State-Dalian Joint Center for Energy Research (JCER) between Penn State and Dalian University of Technology. He specializes in clean fuels and catalysis research including catalytic conversion and utilization of energy resources, including coal, petroleum, natural gas, biomass and carbon dioxide as a carbon source. His current research interests include catalysis in fuel processing for ultra-clean fuels and fuel cells; CO2 capture, conversion and utilization; reforming of hydrocarbon and alcohol fuels for syngas and H2 production; shape-selective catalysis for synthesis of organic chemicals; catalysis and reaction chemistry for energy conversion; and synthesis and applications of nano-porous catalytic and sorbent materials.

Dr. Song worked at Osaka Gas Company Research Center in Japan prior to joining Penn State. He also held visiting professorships in Imperial College London, University of Paris VI, Tsinghua University, Dalian University of Technology, Tianjin University, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (Dalian) and Institute of Coal Chemistry (Taiyuan) in Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Taiyuan University of Technology.

Dr. Song has published 240 refereed journal papers and 28 book chapters, edited 6 books and 12 special issues of research journals, delivered 50 plenary or keynote lectures at international conferences, and given over 240 invited lectures worldwide. He is an inventor for 7 patents.

He has served on numerous boards and committees, including serving as the Chair of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Petroleum Division (2003-2005), Chair of the ACS Fuel Division (2007-2009), Chair of the Advisory Board for International Pittsburgh Coal Conference (2004-2006), Chair of 12th International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization (2013), Co-chair of 24th North American Catalysis Society Biennial Meeting (2015), and Chair or Co-chair of 35 international symposia related to clean fuels, catalysis, CO2 capture and utilization, fuel processing for fuel cells, and heavy oil upgrading. His awards include Henry Storch Award in Fuel Chemistry from American Chemical Society (2010); Fellow of American Chemical Society (2010); Distinguished Researcher in Petroleum Chemistry from American Chemical Society; Faculty Scholar Medal in Engineering from Penn State; Distinguished Professor at Penn State; the Herman Pines Award for Outstanding Research in Catalysis from the Catalysis Club of Chicago, and the Catalysis Club of Philadelphia Award and UOP; QianRen Jihua Award from China; Fulbright Distinguished Scholar from the US-UK Commission; Chang Jiang Scholar from Ministry of Education of China; Most Cited Authors in catalysis from Elsevier for 2001-2005, 2002-2006 and 2003-2007; Distinguished Catalysis Researcher Lectureship from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory; Robinson Distinguished Lectureship in Chemical Engineering from University of Alberta, Canada; NEDO Fellowship and AIST Fellowship Awards from Japan; and the Wilson Award for Excellence in Research, and Faculty Mentoring Award at Penn State. He has also served as an advisory board member for US DOE Energy Frontier Research Center, US NSF Engineering Research Center, and as a consultant or advisor for some major energy companies including BP, ExxonMobil, and Saudi Aramco.

Currently, he is on the advisory board for multiple professional journals, including Energy & Fuels, Catalysis Today, Applied Catalysis B: Environmental, Chemical Engineering & Technology, Greenhouse Gases: Science and Technology, Journal of CO2 Utilization, Research on Chemical Intermediates, RSC Catalysis series, Chinese Journal of Catalysis, Acta Petrolei Sinica-Petroleum Processing, and Journal of Fuel Chemistry and Technology.

Dr. Song received a bachelor degree in chemical engineering from Dalian University of Technology, China, and a masters degree and doctorate in applied chemistry from Osaka University, Japan.

Active Research Projects: 

My research areas include: 1) catalytic fuel processing for clean energy applications such as ultra clean fuels, hydrogen and synthesis gas production, and fuel cell applications; 2) carbon dioxide CO2 capture and utilization as fuels and chemicals; 3) catalysis for synthesis of value-added chemicals such as shape-selective synthesis of monomers for advanced aromatic polymer materials.
