Career Opportunities
A variety of career options exist for recipients with degrees in Environmental Systems Engineering and in Geo-Environmental Engineering:
- They are employed by large corporations to identify, monitor and reduce emissions and discharges to ensure compliance with environmental regulations; to obtain legal permits for company activities; trouble-shoot problems; design waste handling procedures; and supervise recycling and multiple-use activities.
- They are employed by consulting companies in planning and design associated with environmental conservation and restoration. Included are companies specializing in groundwater protection and restoration, air pollution monitoring, analysis and control, recycling and site restoration.
- They are employed by government agencies at federal, state, regional and urban levels to provide expertise in the development, implementation and enforcement of environmental legislation.
- They are employed as professors in engineering and applied science programs. Typical employers are the energy and natural resource sectors, regulatory agencies, research institutes and the legislative arena.
Skill Sets
Students completing these programs will acquire capability in the following:
- Core competency in disciplines associated with geo-environmental engineering, acquired from on-campus programs in Earth and atmospheric sciences and engineering.
- Integrative skills derived from collaborative learning course(s), including the completion of team projects, and development of oral and visual communication skills.
- Broad understanding of how their specific discipline fits within the broader context of engineering and environmental issues.
- Practical qualification and training of interest to employers in the environmental area.
