How to Apply


Admission to the Energy and Mineral Engineering graduate program is an ongoing process and applications are accepted at any time. Target dates of March 31 and October 31 are suggested for admission in the fall and spring semesters, respectively. For international students requiring entry visas to the United States, the earlier target dates of January 15 for the fall semester and August 31 for the spring semester, are suggested.


Students with a 3.00 junior/senior average and with appropriate course backgrounds will be considered for admission. The best-qualified applicants will be accepted up to the number of spaces that are available for new students. Exceptions to the minimum 3.00 grade-point average may be made for students with special backgrounds, abilities, and interests.




Application Requirements


In order to apply to our graduate program, you are required to send application materials to two different locations at Penn State. Follow the instructions below on what materials need to be sent to each place.


Materials to Send to the Penn State Graduate School


The process of applying for admission to graduate school at Penn State requires an applicant to complete the Electronic Application (including remitting a fee, payable by credit card, check, or money order).


If you do not wish to pay the application fee by credit card, please download the Application Fee Form and mail it along with your non-refundable application fee to:

Applications without fee payment cannot be processed.


As part of your electronic application, you must upload the following additional materials through the Graduate School's Electronic Application Portal:

  1. Three letters of recommendation.
  2. Statement of purpose.
  3. CV or Resume.

In addition, you must submit the following items to the university:

  1. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores. Please inform ETS to send official score reports to institution code 2660.
    • Scores from the Graduate Record Examination Aptitude Test (GRE) are required for admission. GREs MUST be taken BEFORE applying. A minimum score of 650 on the Quantitative portion with a minimum score of 3.0 on the Analytical Writing portion must be obtained. A minimum score of 300 on the Verbal portion is required.
  2. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Scores. Please inform ETS to send official score reports to institution code 2660. (International Students Only).
    • All international applicants whose first language is not English or who have not received baccalaureate or master's degrees from an institution in which the language of instruction is English must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) examination. A TOEFL score of 550 on the paper test, a score of 213 on the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 on the Internet test is required for admission. On the Internet version, a minimum score of 19 is required on the speaking portion. Applicants with Internet-based TOEFL speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisional admission provided their Graduate Record Exam Analytical Writing score is 4.0 or higher. Provisional admission requires an institutional test of English proficiency upon first enrollment and, if necessary, remedial course work.
  3. Application for Visa Document and Financial Certification Form (International Students Only).
    • Proof of financial certification must accompany these two documents in the form of original bank statements, affidavits of support, etc.

  1. Two official transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended, both undergraduate and graduate. Photo copies and uncertified transcripts are NOT ACCEPTED.
    • A Transcript Request Form is provided for your convenience.
    • International applicants must submit official or attested university records, with certified translations if the records are not in English.
    • Notarized copies are not sufficient.
    • Applications WILL NOT be reviewed without official transcripts. Photo copies and uncertified transcripts are not accepted.

Please do not submit information with your application that cannot be used in the admission decision process. This includes certificates, high school and other secondary education materials and transcripts, award certificates, Individual Education Plans (IEPs), medical records, statements from physicians or psychologists, or legal documents. Such information will be returned by your intended program of study.
