Career Opportunities
New market dynamics in energy and resource industries are leading to new employment opportunities for EBF graduates. Due to electricity deregulation there has been a dramatic increase in the demand by utility companies for employees who understand the basic sciences of energy while also understanding the basic roles of financial markets. Prior to this, deregulation in the oil and natural gas industries increased the demand for employment in those industries.
In addition, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of energy commodities futures and options traded on major exchanges. One of the most interesting of those commodities contracts deals with weather derivatives. The Department of Energy and Mineral Engineering has significant interests in energy issues, ranging from petroleum engineering, to creating new technologies for the uses of coal and other energies, to concerns about pollution from energy sources including global warming.
Therefore, there are many diverse employment opportunities available to students graduating from the EBF program. Job opportunities are available in industry, government agencies, private consulting companies, and universities. Summer internship positions are also highly recommended to our students. The department has strong ties with many energy-related companies that visit us each year to interview and recruit interns and full-time employees.
