On April 10, 2007, the Penn State Student Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers hosted a dinner meeting at the Atherton Hotel in State College. The chapter asked Francis P. Sehn of Hilb, Rogal and Hobbs (HRH.com) of Pittsburgh to speak at the event. Fran is an Assistant Vice President of Risk Management Services which is the 8th largest insurance broker in the United States. There, he provides safety and risk management consulting services to middle market accounts throughout the U.S.
He originally graduated from Point Park College with a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology in 1973, but returned to school to earn his Masters in Safety Science from Indiana University of PA in 1988. His loss control career started in 1973 as a loss control consultant and he spent 18 years with several major insurance carriers. Prior to joining HRH, he was the Manager of Safety for Washington Steel Corporation from 1991 until April 1999.
His presentation entitled "A Primer on Risk Management for the Safety Professional," explored the risk management practices from both the traditional and business model standpoint. Fran showed us the four steps of traditional risk management process. He pointed out that even though we may not realize it, we probably use these steps in our daily lives. He used a very simple example for the model of risk management. The example that was used dealt with the amount of risk present at a shopping mall. To most this would seem irrelevant, but to the insurance provider it is big business. Some malls experience 100,000 people daily; therefore, the chance of something happening can be great.
If you or someone you know would like to speak to the Penn State Industrial Health and Safety Society on various related topics please contact Dr. Joel Haight at jmh44@psu.edu.
