A room of over fifty guests joined J. Brett Harvey, president and chief executive officer of CONSOL Energy Inc., as he presented the 17th Annual G. Albert Shoemaker Lecture on Friday, April 25. Mr. Harvey's lecture, entitled "Reclaiming the High Ground on Safety," focused on mine safety, a topic that has topped the news on several occasions over the past two years.
Following the Shoemaker Lecture, alumni and guests joined EME faculty, staff, and students for the 2008 EME Awards Banquet to commemorate the outstanding achievements of EME students and alumni over the past year.

This year's Robert Stefanko Distinguished Achievement Award in Mineral Engineering was presented to Dr. David R. Maneval, Retired Professor at the University of Alaska, while Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Director of Oil and Gas Ventures of Qatar Petroleum, accepted the C. Drew Stahl Distinguished Achievement Award in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. Other highlights of the evening included:
