

Dr. Sam E. Jonah, KBE, is currently the Non-Executive President of AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. He is also the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; a Visiting Professor of Business at University of Witwatersrand Business School of Johannesburg, South Africa; as well as the Executive Chairman of Equator Exploration Company, a London listed oil exploration company.
Dr. Jonah was educated at Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall and the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. In his illustrious career, Dr. Jonah has led the transformation of Ashanti from a one-mine operation into a multinational corporation and the world's second-largest gold producer with 24 mines in 14 countries worldwide, with listings in London, Ghana, and the New York Stock Exchange.
Dr. Jonah serves on various boards including Anglo American Corporation of South Africa, Transnet, Amplats, and the African Regional Advisory Board of the London Business School. He was previously a member of the Governing Body of the School of Oriental and African Studies and a Trustee on the Camborne School of Mines of the Exeter University. He currently serves on the International Investment Advisory Councils of Presidents Thabo Mbeki (South Africa), President Kufuor's (Ghana) and President Obasanjo (Nigeria). He is a member of the United Nations Secretary-General's Global Compact Advisory Council. In 2003, he was Co-Chairman of the World Economic Forum held in Durban, South Africa. He was until April 2004, a Director of the Board of Lonmin plc on which he had served since 1992. He was formerly on the Advisory Council of the President of the African Development Bank and was also a member of the Advisory Council of the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
In 2003, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Head of the Commonwealth conferred on Dr. Jonah an honorary knighthood as Knight Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) for his exceptional achievements as an African businessman, a leading business executive from the Commonwealth and an international public figure. Named by CNN / Time in 2004 as one of the 25 Business Influentials setting the global standards for management, ethics, marketing and innovation, Dr. Jonah had conferred on him by the Mining Journal in the same year, the Industry's Lifetime Achievement Award. Also among his awards and honours, is the honorary Doctor of Science (D. Sc) degree awarded jointly by the Camborne School of Mines and the University of Exeter (UK).
In line with his commitment to public service, Dr. Jonah regularly undertakes speaking engagements and has also co-ordinated the efforts of several international corporate bodies in their desire to support educational and medical causes in Africa. Most recently he has been appointed a Trustee to the Nelson Mandela Legacy Trust (UK).
Dr. Jonah is the 2006 G. Albert Shoemaker Lecturer in Mineral Engineering. He will be giving a seminar on "Mining Investment in Africa: Opportunities, Prospects and Challenges" on Friday, April 21, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. in Room 22 Deike Building. This seminar is open to the public.
